Nuremberg Embraces Climate-Friendly Power Technology: First Fluorine-Free Switchgear Installed

The energy transition is making its way into Nuremberg’s power grid: regional distribution network operator N-ERGIE Netz GmbH is driving the conversion of its medium-voltage switchgear to fluorine-free technology. The first switchgear featuring Siemens’ innovative blue GIS technology has been installed at the Volckamerstraße transformer station. This eco-friendly switchgear replaces the climate-damaging SF6 gas with a mixture of natural components from ambient air, known as "clean air."

This initiative aligns with upcoming EU regulations banning the use of SF6 in medium-voltage switchgear starting in 2026. “The new compact system is not only a crucial step toward climate protection but also a milestone in making our infrastructure more sustainable,” emphasized Markus Popp, Head of Network Planning at N-ERGIE Netz GmbH.

Siemens is supporting the transition with cutting-edge technology that is fluorine-free, environmentally friendly, and compliant with future regulations. “Our switchgear solutions are sustainable, future-proof, and can be upgraded with cloud-based condition monitoring if needed,” explained Christoph Menger, Head of Electrification and Automation at Siemens Germany.

This conversion is part of a comprehensive modernization program. In 2024, N-ERGIE plans to install over 200 new systems, replacing outdated stations and supporting network expansion in new residential areas.
