“And an Emmy goes to...” – a touch of Hollywood at the Long Night of Science

On Saturday, October 25, 2025, the Long Night of Science invited visitors to experience research live in Erlangen, Fürth, and Nuremberg. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS opened three locations with a program of over 50 individual offerings that brought current research trends and future topics to life. This year, the event at Fraunhofer IIS was also marked by the Emmy® Award for the JPEG XS video codec.

International award recognizes Fraunhofer's latest innovation

The Emmy® Award for Engineering, Science and Technology for the JPEG XS video codec recognizes its development and implementation in international standards and new products. The award was presented to the video codec experts at Fraunhofer IIS in North Hollywood just a few days before the Long Night of Science. JPEG XS enables high-resolution video data to be transmitted in real time via standard Ethernet with virtually no loss in professional media production. Guests can view the original Emmy statue along with many other highlights at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen.

Visitors were able to experience this philosophy of innovation firsthand at the three locations of the largest Fraunhofer Institute. Unique insights, a lively atmosphere, and exciting research topics characterized the program, which featured fascinating exhibits and numerous hands-on activities.

Hands-on intelligent technologies

Research comes to life at the sites in Erlangen, Fürth, and Nuremberg. At the X-ray Technology Development Center in Fürth, visitors are invited to “X-ray something!” They can have their favorite objects scanned in a portable CT scanner and gain a unique insight into what lies beneath the surface. In Erlangen-Tennenlohe, highlights include the AudioLabs, which make sound waves visible using augmented reality, and the Gaming Lab, which, under the motto “More than a feeling,” shows how emotions such as stress and overload can be quantified by measuring biosignals. Meanwhile, the GAIA initiative builds a bridge to nature conservation: in an interactive game, guests can play the role of rangers using AI and satellite communication to track down orphaned elephants in Africa. In Nuremberg's city center at the Augustinerhof, Allinga Voice offers the opportunity to put the finishing touches to an intelligent AI voice output by adjusting speed, pitch, and intonation.
